Wall monument. A plaque of cream marble with dark grey inlay. Shield above Azure a fess between three hands tilted or (Bate, Ashby de la Zouch) Below, a wide winged angels head. M S Thomae Bate Gen Cuius inter caetera animi Sui ornamenta vere eximia Flagrans Liturgiae Anglicanae amor et reverentia Et Storgi erga Liberos prudentia feliciter temperate pulchre eminebant. Natus West Broughton in Com Derb Dec 21 1648 Uxorem duxit Dorotheam Oldershaw de Regworth in Agro Leic Et qua prolem habuit Annam I.H.S. Dorotheam, Thomam, Carolum I.H.S. Iacobum, Elizabetham, Ianam. Piam Animam coelo reddidit Jun 1: 1707 AEt: 59. My translation: Sacred to the Memory of Thomas Bate, Gentleman in whom, among his other exceptional qualities was exhibited his passionate love of and reverence for the Anglican Church Liturgy. And to his beloved Children his Generosity, wisdom, happy moderation were beautifully projected. He was born at West Broughton in the County of Derby on December the 21st 1648. He took to wife Dorothy Oldershaw of Regworth in Leicester Shire, by whom he had issue Ann (died) Dorothy, Thomas, Charles (died), James, Elizabeth and Jane. His pious soul returned to Heaven June the 1st 1707 his age 59 years. (Photo Aug 2015).
