Wall memorial. In memory of Thomas John Kirkland of this place, surgeon, last surviving son of Thomas Kirkland MD whom a diligent and successful practice in his profession for many years and a scrupulous punctuality in all his dealings endeared as much to the public as his kind and affectionate conduct did to his family and friends . He died on the 3rd day of August 1824 in the 64th year of his age. The memory of the just is blessed Proverbs 10.7. Also Mary, wife of the said Thomas Kirkland who died at Warrington March 24th 1845 aged 85 years. The shield represents Sable three mullets argent within a bordure engrailed or (Kirkland). The elder Thomas Kirkland MD (d1798) wrote several important medical books and essays. These are listed in Nichols Leicestershire vol 3 p632. (Photo Aug 2015).
