Depositum honoratissimi & nobilissimi domini Theophili comitis Huntingdoniae baronis de Hastings, Hungerford, Botreaux, Moels, Newmarch, & Molines, capitalis justiciarii, & justiciarii itinerantis omnium forestarum, chacearum, parcorum, & warrenarum circa Trentam, pensionariorum generosorum capitanei, provinciarum Leicestriae & Derbiae locum-tenentis, & ex sanctioribus consiliis augustissimus & serenissimis principibus Carolo & Jacobo regibus,dominis suis colendissimis. Hic illustrissimus comes duas duxit uxores; Elizabetham, filiam & unicam haeredem Johannis Lewys, equitis aurari & baronetti; & Francescam filiam unicam & haeredem Francisci Fowler, armigeri, in cognomen de Levison adopt. Thomae vicecomitis de Killmorcy relict. Decesserunt in Christo cum signo fidei, & requiescunt in somno pacis; quorum mortales reliquiae, donec ilia dies retributionis advenerit, ut resurgant immortales, hic deponuntur. There follows a list of his children which I have included in my translation: In God in the highest, In sacred memory. The resting place of the most honorable and most noble lord Theophilus earl of Huntingdon, Baron Hastings, Hungerford Botreaux, Moels, Newmarch and Molines, Chief Justice and Justice over all the forests, chases, parks and warrens around the River Trent, ?Colonel of the local trained soldiery, Lord Lieutenant of the counties of Leicestershire and Derbyshire and Privy Counsellor to those most august and serene Princes: Kings Charles and James his very rewarding lords. This most illustrious earl took two wives: Elizabeth, daughter and sole heiress of Sir John Lewis, Baronet; and Frances, only daughter and heiress of Francis Fowler, esquire, with the adopted (ie additional) surname of Levison, relict of Thomas, Viscount Kilmorey. They died Christians with the signs of that faith and rest in the sleep of peace; Whose mortal remains, until the Day of Judgment shall come and they are resurrected as Immortals, are deposited here.
(in Christo cum signo fidei-. might be interpreted as- In the rites of the High Church). He was born at Donington 10th December 1650 and died at London 30th May 1701. Countess Elizabeth b London 15th June 1655 d London 24th December 1688. Countess Frances b Kinderton 11th August 1664 d Bath 24th December 1723. He had issue by his first wife: Thomas lord Hastings; Lucy; George lord Hastings; Sarah; Elizabeth; Mary; Dorothy and Sarah (Only Lucy, George and Sarah survived childhood- they are missing from the published pedigree in Nichols). By his second wife: Anne-Jacqueline; Alice; Frances; Theophilus; Catherine-Mary; Ferdinand (d. infancy); Margaret.
